Entrepreneur Make It Big in Restaurant Business Is Now Venturing Into Internet Marketing Business

It is always inspiring to hear personal business stories of entrepreneurs who overcame all odds and doubts in venturing into business and make it big. Last Sunday, I just read about how a 35 years old Thai Express Founder Ivan Lee, who started his F & B business with $300K and eventually sold his controlling stake for a sizeable $114 million in the process netting himself $80 million.

What was even more impressive was Ivan had no background or experience in F & B business before he first ventured into his first F & B business. Despite all his doubters, including his family members, about the viability of his business when he first started, he persevered and carried on. Apparently, his father-in-law was also a successful entrepreneur who founded the contract manufacturing firm JIT Holdings and sold it to Fortune 500 company Flextronics for $1 billion in 2000. This deal netted the senior Mr Goh some
$300 million. When starting out, he had benefitted from the financial and advisory support given by his father-in-law, but, subsequently, he went against his father-in-law advise by venturing into other restaurant businesses which were highly successful and are now contributing about two thirds of the business turnovers. An element of luck also play an important part in his business success as he had opened close to 100 stores but about 10 to 20 percent of the stores were not profitable. So he was lucky that his first 10 ventures were successful which provided the cash flow for his subsequent business expansion.

He is now venturing into the internet market in China despite not being in the IT industry. When The Sunday Times journalist contacted him, it found the entrepreneur in Shenzhen, experiencing growing pains all over again. He says that his friends and family are again doubting his new venture. His remark was: “I am a rooke now playing in a much bigger league and I feel like I am nine years back, starting all over again.” This young millionaire is setting his eye on his next big venture where he wants to build the next Baidu (China’s equivalent of Google) or even the next Facebook.

Lesson learnt: To make it big in business you need to be bold, have perseverance and be unique and certainly having financial support from family helps and also an element of luck. He is certainly one hack of a brave entrepreneur!

My advise is learn about internet and social media marketing before plunging into the business and be better prepared for your business venture into the internet marketing world. Its summer and so for that reason Ill break from my insistence on pragmatic advice and write on a topic you might consider fluff. Yet its the biggest mistake I see small business owners make, including me. We have no patience. Im not suggesting that we all go out and spend a bajillion dollars on advertising during American Idol. But I do think that in order for your PR and marketing tactics to work you have to learn to wait a bit. Here are a few tips to use to figure out if youre too impatient.

1. Are you measuring your campaign results by the number of orders youre getting off each initiative? In a word, DONT. Look at your website hits instead, or the traffic in your store. Whats the first step toward buying your product or service? Do they request a brochure? Do they visit the website? Measure by those “first steps” in the short term.

2. Are you changing your marketing strategy on a weekly or monthly basis? WRONG. You had better have confidence in your strategy (or your consultant) from the start. Nothing works if you dont believe in it 100% from the beginning. Switching around what youre doing on a constant basis and youll end up running circles.

3. Are you relying on only one outreach method? It may work now, but it will stop working eventually. Or youll end up trying one thing after another. BLEND your messaging channels. If youre doing radio, connect it to an online promotion as well. Trying guerilla marketing? Make sure youve got some PR working in conjunction with those “on the ground” techniques.

Particularly in the online world, patience is the key to success. Jay Conrad Levinson, the founder of Guerilla Marketing, believes that patience is the most important characteristic of successful entrepreneurs. Be confident in your approach. Measure it wisely. And then, like that old farmer in the field, be patient and watch the seeds of your marketing work grow.

Surround yourself with the support of others that you can share successes with. It can be challenging to get out there and share your frustrations with another. However, most often, the case is that the person you are speaking to is currently or has had a similar situation, and ill be glad to give you thoughts and ideas based on their experience.

Step away from it all. Really, shut down the computer, turn off the technology and get away from it all. Try going for a workout, walk in nature, listen your music to get your creative juices flowing and your energy soaring.

Do something to re-connect to your inner dreams and goals. Do you meditate, read, journal? What will help you be re-inspired and remember why you began this journey to start with?

Attend various networking meetings, business trainings, weekend events. Building relationships is key to success. Enjoy a few in person meetings over coffee for a much needed break.

Call on people you trust to bounce off ideas, frustrations, and fears. I love the Buddy – System! Work with your friends and colleagues to keep accountability and get trusted feedback.

Check in with your Coach or Mentor. Working with a coach will catapult your progress. If you don’t have one, consider doing so.

These efforts can help make your experience as an Online Entrepreneur a rich, fulfilled and satisfying one. You may have an opportunity to gain vast knowledge, feedback, and creative ideas. These key ingredients assist your business to flourish more quickly and smoothly. He later sold the company for $7 million and bought 60 food brokerage companies whose total sale exceeded $500 million.

All in all, Wilson started over 100 companies and turned around a few. He was voted America’s no.1 columnist for the year 1995 and 1996 by the American society of Business for his monthly contribution to the Success Magazine. Wilson was also the past publisher of INC. magazine.

Along with being the Founder/Chairman of council of growing companies, nationwide organization, Wilson was also the leader and voice of entrepreneur’s movement in America. His book “For Entrepreneurs Only” was a bestseller and still one of the most admired in this genre.

In his book, he discussed the hunters and farmers of cave man age. He reasoned from science and a variety of studies that genes are passed down and often entrepreneurs are the children of entrepreneurs. At some point thousands of years ago, entrepreneurs were the hunters of our world while the farmers tend to be employees.

He enjoyed great success in life and died in 1997 at the age of 78 from lung cancer.
